The responsibilities of the Academic Council are:

  • to elect the Rector and Vice-Rector from a shortlist of three proposed by the funding body;
  • to propose to the funding body that the Rector or Vice-Rector be relieved from office or to reply to the funding body's intention to do the same, should the Rector (Vice-Rector) have grossly neglected or failed in their official duties or should they no longer be in a position to fulfill their official duties;
  • to propose to the UAS Council (FHR), after consultation with the funding body, that changes be made to accredited degree programs;
  • to propose to the funding body that degree programs be set up or discontinued;
  • to make suggestions to the funding body on the employment of academic staff;
  • to coordinate the subject matter of courses and examinations;
  • to evaluate teaching and examining as well as the regulations for degree programs and examinations;
  • to award or revoke academic degrees and to validate academic degrees obtained abroad.

The Head of the Academic Council is responsible for:

  • admitting candidates to examinations, allocating examiners and setting examination dates;
  • crediting and recognizing courses and examinations in individual cases;
  • invalidating examination results;
  • issuing instructions to members of the academic staff concerning the type and extent of their teaching duties insofar as this is necessary to keep the courses running smoothly in compliance with the regulations for degree programs;
  • assigning teaching contracts on the basis of proposals from or after consultation with the Academic Council;
  • public representation of the Academic Coucil and putting the decisions made by the Academic Council into effect.
