The international symposium on "Social Development and Poverty Reduction in East Africa: The Role of Social Work" took place on 26th of June 2012 at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) in Feldkirchen/Carinthia. The symposium was organized by the project team of PROSOWO with the intention to present the first research findings of the partnership and to share and discuss them with the audience. A variety of visitors from different countries filled the lecture hall of CUAS, which was decorated with colourful African fabrics. Among the visitors was a group of APPEAR scholarship holders, who travelled from Vienna to Carinthia in order to attend the symposium.

After opening words by Prof. Dietmar Brodel, the Rector of CUAS, the PROSOWO project partners presented insights from their research partnership: FH-Prof. Helmut Spitzer from CUAS talked about horizontal dialogue within a partnership, Dr. Janestic Twikirize from Makerere University presented recent discourses on social work from an African perspective, Dr. Gidraph Wairire elaborated on the Global Agenda for social work and social development in the context of East Africa, Dr. Zena Mnasi Mabeyo provided empirical findings on social work and the Millennium Development Goals, and Charles Rutikanga M.A. talked about the role of social workers in post-genocide Rwanda. Furthermore, there was room for questions from the audience. Mag. Sabrina Riedl and Elijah Macharia Ndungu MA guided the participants through the event.

APPEAR scholarship holders joined the interesting discussion with the presenters. After the official programme ended, East African specialties were served. The evening ended with live music from Pascal "Papi" Lopongo & Band.
